July Patch Tuesday: six bulletins, three critical E-mail

Microsoft is preparing to release six security bulletins on Tuesday July 10, including two that affect Vista.
Three of the bulletins are rated 'critical', two 'important' and one 'moderate'.

The first bulletin concerns Excel, and is rated critical only for Excel 2000. Excel 2003, the Excel 2003 viewer, Excel 2007 and the Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 are also being patched, but the flaw is only considered important.

Microsoft Office is also the target of the second bulletin, which addresses an important flaw in Publisher 2007.

Vindows Vista (including the x64 release) will receive a 'moderate' update, while an important update is coming for all currently supported versions of Windows Server 2003.

Windows XP hasn't been overlooked, with an important bulletin set to be announced for the Professional edition.

The remaining bulletin is relevant to all currently supported versions of Windows and concerns critical updates to the .NET Framework versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0.

The critical and important updates all concern issues that can lead to remote code execution. The moderate vulnerability in Vista can result in information disclosure.

Microsoft does not reveal detailed information about the contents of its security bulletins until they are released. The advance notification (and, when released, the full notification) is available on Microsoft TechNet.

The company also plans to release an updated version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool. There will also be four non-security, high-priority updates released via Windows Update and Windows Server Update Services, and one via Windows Update and Software Update Services.
