South Korean electronics company LG has filed suit against Taiwanese computer maker Quanta, alleging infringement of four patents relating to DVD technology.

LG says these patents have been used without permission in the production of notebook computers for US companies. It seeks an injunction against Quanta, and monetary compensation.

Quanta's customers include Apple, Dell and HP, but it is not clear at this stage which products embody the disputed intellectual property.

"LG's proprietorship of DVD technologies is widely recognised throughout industry and the unlicensed use of our intellectual property is not acceptable under any circumstances," said Jeong Hwan Lee, executive vice president and head of LG Electronics' intellectual property centre.

LG and Quanta already have a matter before the courts. In 2000, LG sued Qanta over patents relating to PC technology. The case is expected to run until 2008.
