June Patch Tuesday to deliver Vista fixes and more E-mail
by Stephen Withers
Friday, 08 June 2007
What comes after Queen's Birthday Monday? Microsoft's Patch Tuesday - and it's going to keep administrators and individual PC users busy with a selection of bulletins including some critical issues.

Four of this month's bulletins are labelled 'critical' and relate to vulnerabilities that may allow remote code execution. Windows 2000, XP (including x64) and Server 2003 are all addressed by these bulletins, along with Internet Explorer (versions 5, 6 and 7), Outlook Express, and Windows Mail in Vista.

There's also an 'important' remote code execution patch in Visio 2002 and 2003 (why such an issue isn't rated 'critical' is a mystery at this stage), as well as a 'moderate' information disclosure issue affecting Windows Vista.

Exactly how many vulnerabilities will be fixed by each patch remains to be seen.

Microsoft also plans to release the customary update for the Malicious Software Removal Tool, as well as seven non-security, high-priority updates. One of those will likely be an updated Outlook spam filter.

This is the first time that Microsoft has used the more detailed format for its advanced notification of security bulletins.{moscomment}
