A Nintendo executive has said the company expects to sell 35 million Wii consoles in the US alone.

Total Wii sales are around twice that of Sony's PlayStation 3, but Microsoft's Xbox 360 has more than redoubled that number again, albeit with a one-year lead. April's figures showed the Wii is easily ahead of its competitors, selling 380,000 units compared with 174,000 PS3s and 82,000 Xbox 360s.

Nintendo of America marketing chief George Harrison told Bloomberg that the company expects to sell 35 million Wiis by 2011 or 2012.

"Demand is much greater than we anticipated," the article quotes Harrison as saying. "A year ago no one thought we would be in this position."

Nintendo's strategy has been to target people who don't usually play video games. Hardcore gamers who demand maximum performance are a minority, and by appealing to a mass market beyond the stereotypical teens to twenties Nintendo has been able to achieve excellent sales.

The company hopes this also means the lifespan of the Wii hardware design will be extended sufficiently to achieve the volumes being discussed. After all, the PS2 is still outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3, so the Wii's long-term future shouldn't be written off.{moscomment}
