On Wednesday, May 23, 2007, the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) won a $5.6 billion seven-year contract with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to provide the agency and its contractors with technology devices and services.

HP will provide NASA, its contractors, and the Department of Veterans Affairs with high-tech devices such as desktops and workstations, along with specialized services. The contract is worth a maximum of $5.6 billion over the seven-year period from 2008 to 2014.

The contract is called Solutions for Enterprise-Wide Procurement-4 (SEWP IV). The previous three SEWP contracts were called Scientific and Engineering Workstation Procurement, but were changed in title on March 26, 2007.

The name was changed to better represent the major elements of the contract: IT (information technology) solutions (which include a majority of scientific and engineering solutions) and structural abilities for agency-wide procurements.

In all, NASA awarded 45 SEWP IV contracts to 37 vendors, about 50% of them were small businesses.

One contract winner said the real abbreviation for these contracts is Success Every Way Possible. They each can make up to $5.6 billion over the seven-year period.

HP has been awarded previous contracts under the SEWP II and III plans. According to records, HP delivered to NASA over $620 million of products and services from 1992 to 2007.
