Ironically at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul, Blizzard announced the sequel to arguably the biggest Real Time Strategy game ever.  Yes Zerg fans, StarCraft II is on its way.

It is a national past time in South Korea, as such it does seem fitting to announce the sequel to StarCraft in the nations capital.  At the 2007 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational the game developer made the announcement in front of thousands of no doubt eager attendees.  Included in the presentation was a cinematic trailer, but more importantly a gameplay demonstration by the development team.

From the Press Release: Designed to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with Blizzard's signature approach to game balance. Each race will be further distinguished from the others, with several new units and new gameplay mechanics, as well as new abilities for some of the classic StarCraft units that will be making a reappearance in the game. StarCraft II will also feature a custom 3D-graphics engine with realistic physics and the ability to render several large, highly detailed units and massive armies on-screen simultaneously.

"With StarCraft II, we'll be able to do everything we wanted to do with the original StarCraft and more," stated Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We recognize that expectations are high following the long-running popularity of the original game, but we plan to meet those expectations and deliver an engaging, action-packed, competitive experience that StarCraft players and strategy gamers worldwide will enjoy."

Looking for a simultaneous release on both PC and Mac very patient StarCraft aficionados can expect a whole new way to battle each other as well as a single-player campaign.

Little else is known at this point, expect more information soon.  One thing is for certain, Blizzard (World of Warcraft, Diablo) is a different company from the one that originally gave us StarCraft, expect StarCraft II to have the resources thrown at it to produce that Blizzard polish that has been so successful.
