A joint statement by the companies was long on the advantages of RHEL on System z, but short on detail concerning the collaboration. The project appears to centre on support and development. Red Hat is dedicating some of its technical support and architecture staff to System z, and there will be a joint team "to provide additional capabilities for running Linux-based applications on IBM System z" as well as combined efforts to "accelerate and enhance" RHEL on System z. The first fruit of the collaboration will be a version of Red Hat's Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) for System z. "Governments and enterprises worldwide need highly available, highly secure IT resources. Enterprise Linux and System z uniquely meet those requirements," said Jim Stallings, IBM vice president and general manager, System z. "We are pleased to announce an enhanced relationship with Red Hat to deliver more scalability, security and reliability to Enterprise Linux mainframe solutions." "Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the one major operating system which scales from commodity server to mainframe, giving customers the widest range of choices while standardizing and simplifying their IT environments," said Alex Pinchev, Red Hat's executive vice president and president of international operations.{moscomment} |
