A report from Taiwan says Apple will being receiving shipments of 13.3in and 15.4in LED backlit display panels in the second or third quarter. It is unlikely that the company would use those screen sizes in anything other than notebooks.

A DigiTimes story says AU Optoelectronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (both Acer spinoffs) are having their LED panels certified by Apple, while Coretronic and Kenmos Technologies will provide the backlighting units.

Apple was already expected to introduce new MacBook or MacBook Pro models in that timeframe. The company's current range uses 13in displays in MacBooks and 15 and 17in screens in MacBook Pros.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs recently stated Apple would begin a move to LED backlighting which consumes less power and avoids the use of mercury, a constituent of the fluorescent lamps normally used for backlighting.{moscomment}
