Altec say that it’s perfect as “a complete MP3 music + video multi-component entertainment system – perfectly designed for college dorm rooms, teen rooms, desktops, even the kitchen counter”. And indeed, that is what it’s perfect for. Naturally, you can still plug the dock into a larger TV via an S-Video cable should you require even bigger screen viewing. And thankfully, the screen has RCA inputs, meaning you can plug a video camera or even a digital TV set-top box into the dock so you can use the screen to see video camera vision or use it as a TV. The screen is an 8.5-inch LCD TFT and is ‘high-resolution’, but specific resolution details are not provided. The speakers are ‘custom-engineered’, with Altec saying that will deliver “deliver powerful, concert-like sound”, which when coupled with video, will give you “a true cinematic video experience”. Additional, there’s a built-in four-inch subwoofer, which Altec says will provide “street-rumbling lows” and is “perfectly balanced with two three-inch speaker drivers for crisp, clear mids and highs”. Having heard the speakers at the CeBIT show in Sydney over the past three days, the audio did sound quite high-end, even when impacted by the rest of the trade show going on all around the stand. Altec says that: “the result is immersive, high-quality audio, which is heightened by Altec Lansing SFX (Stereo Field Expander). This technology boosts the sound field and gives the user an immersive stereo effect so that the speakers sound further apart than they really are”. Naturally, an Altec Lansing spokesperson, in this case, Robert Heiblim, the senior veep of Sales and Marketing, has very nice things to say about his new product. He says that: “As the popularity of Internet-based video and digital music skyrockets, consumers want new iPod accessory products that amplify the entire entertainment experience. The iMV712 redefines the concept of an iPod speaker system, delivering consumers a stylish, compact one-two punch of high-fidelity stereo sound plus video display – an ideal digital shelf system for any area of the home or office.” As you’d expect, the dock charges your iPod as it plays, it has an auxiliary input so you can plug into other mp3 players, and as noted previously, has both RCA video/audio inputs and an S-Video output. The feature set as provided at Altec Lansing’s press release is as follows: * High Quality Audio – three-inch Neodymium speakers and built-in four-inch subwoofer. * SFX Technology – fills the room with audio at the touch of a button. * Cool Curves – designed to compliment any room’s décor…kitchen, dorm room or den. * Crisp, Clear Video – High-resolution, widescreen 8.5-inch TFT/LCD panel. * Apple Universal Dock – Dock/charge iPod models with the standard 30 pin connector. * Universal Cradle – Provides a stage to place other MP3 players when listening to them. * Wireless Remote – Easy access to iMV712 (volume, treble/bass, mute) and iPod (forward/reverse, pause, menu, play, stop) controls. * Full Array of Connectivity Options – including RCA input and S-Video output. The unit will be available this month in stores and will retail for US $349.95.{moscomment} |
