Apple reports best-ever March quarter E-mail

Apple has booked its most-profitable March quarter ever, with a net profit of $US770 million.

Other headline figures include $US5.26 billion revenue and 35.1 percent gross margin.

Mac sales were down slightly on the previous quarter, with both volume and revenue down 6 percent. This probably reflects a slight seasonal effect, plus people holding off purchases in the expectation that Mac OS X 10.5 was going to ship this northern spring. (We know know it has been delayed until October.)

iPod sales were down a huge 50 percent by unit and 51 percent by volume, almost certainly due to the pre-Christmas buying that occurs during the December quarter.

The situation looks far more rosy on a year-to-year basis. "The Mac is clearly gaining market share, with sales growing 36 percent—more than three times the industry growth rate," said CEO Steve Jobs. Most of this growth came from MacBook and MacBook Pro sales, which rose by 79 percent, compared with 2 percent unit growth for desktops.

Mac revenue grew strongly, and was up 44 percent. Despite a still impressive 24 percent in unit sales, iPod revenue fell by 1 percent.

Apple doesn't break out iTunes Store figures, but the "Other Music Related Products and Services" category which includes music downloads showed a 35 percent year-on-year increase in revenue. How much of this came from music sales as opposed to iPod accessories remains a mystery.

"Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter of 2007, we expect revenue of about $US5.1 billion and earnings per diluted share of about $US0.66," said CFO Peter Oppenheimer.{moscomment}
