Internode NodePhone product manager Jim Kellett said NodePhone2 was suitable for both business and residential customers. However Internode does not restrict the service to customers on Internode broadband connections, saying: "The NodePhone service can be accessed via any broadband Internet service speed of 512kbps download and 128kbps upload or greater." An Internode spokesman told iTWire: "Internode does have some 'roaming' business customers who use their account via their laptop and a 'soft phone' when they're 'on the road'. They understand when they do that, that their call quality can't then be guaranteed. However, Internode has many reports from customers who do this that their call quality consistently outperforms other VoI services in this operational mode. This is due to the fact that the call is still travelling (in the main) over the Internode network." The launch of NodePhone2 comes 18 months after Internode introduced NodePhone1, a VoIP service which supports on-net calls between users and outgoing PSTN calls only. NodePhone1 will continue to be available, as will an extension to NodePhone1, called MultiLine, that facilitates the connection of larger businesses with IP PBX phone systems. NodePhone2 costs $10 per month to existing Internode customers with no included calls or $20 with $15 worth of calls. Internode is offering 18-cent untimed calls to any standard fixed telephone service in Australia. It is also offering voicemail integrated with email, with no additional usage charges. Calls to Australian mobile users are charged at 30 cents per minute, in one second increments with a one minute minimum charge. International calls are from five cents per minute with a 15 cent flagfall. The NodePhone2 service also uses Acme Packet's session border controllers "to maximise its service reach, protect the NodePhone network against malicious attacks and assure high service quality." According to Acme Packet, its QoS reporting features report media statistics, including jitter, packet loss and latency for every call, allowing Internode to detect and isolate quality-impacting problems. Hosted NAT traversal allows subscribers located behind firewalls to be served by NodePhone2 without requiring any changes at the customer site. "Acme Packet was the correct choice for our session border control needs due to its industry-leading feature set, carrier-class scale and performance as well as proven success as BroadSoft's premier access solution partner," said Kellett.{moscomment} |
