100 million iPods have finally been sold, making it the most popular music player in the known universe, despite the fact Nokia claims more sales due to most of their phones playing mp3s.

Of course, Apple is likely to be releasing new models of the iPod with the iPhone’s new interface, making the decision even harder – does one buy a 100Gb hard disk equipped 6th-gen iPod, or one with a 32Gb flash disk, both models of which have not been announced but are more than possible with today’s technology – or does one go for a 4Gb or 8Gb iPhone? That said, does one wait for a 2nd-gen iPhone with 16Gb or 32Gb of storage instead, and make do with the existing 5th-gen iPod or 2nd-gen iPod nano, or even, shock horror, earlier models that haven’t as yet been upgraded? One thing is certain from the 100 million sales of iPods so far – many people are simply unable to resist upgrading to the latest iPod model, and naturally, if new iPods have the iPhone’s sublimely stunning interface, the urge to resist upgrading will be very difficult to, er… resist! The iPod has also become THE digital device to give as a gift, whether it be for a birthday, Christmas or other occasion. So, it would seem that, unless someone else comes up with a genuinely better digital device, that millions more sales of iPods are assured for the forseeable future. Of course, none of this will stop Apple’s mp3 player competitors, nor their phone competitors, with both Nokia and Sony Ericsson the two main contenders for digital devices that can, at least in terms of features, if not interfaces, match much of what the iPhone has to offer. So… a hearty congratulations to Apple for reaching the 100 million iPod mark, of which I am personally responsible for five sales, and which many of you reading are responsible for at least one, if not more, sales too.
I just hope Apple never ‘jumps the shark’, for the world needs the innovative technologies that Apple brings to the world, if for nothing else but to simply show us all how it should really be done, although in truth for much more than just that! |
