iPhone may arrive June 11 E-mail

A fresh buzz about Apple's forthcoming iPhone has been generated by a claim that it will go on sale in the US on June 11.

News.com's Declan McCullagh wrote in his blog that when he rang Cingular late last week, a customer service manager said June 11 would be the day.

This would coincide with day one of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC, held in San Francisco, June 11-15), which would give Apple CEO Steve Jobs a good platform to announce that Apple's long-awaited phone has begun shipping.

At least one other news outlet is reporting Cingular staff would not be any more specific than June, which leaves us wondering whether the manager McCullagh spoke to let something slip or was simply making an educated guess.

It's not hard to imagine Cingular execs - or more likely their minions - poring over the call centre log tapes for last Thursday in an attempt to identify the culprit. It's also easy to imagine such an effort being at Apple's instigation: Steve Jobs is well-known for his desire to keep information under wraps until the Mac and iPod maker is ready to release it.

Cingular (aka AT&T) will initially have exclusive access to the iPhone in the US. The device is expected to be available in Europe by the end of the year, and in other markets during 2008.{moscomment}
