IBM's Smart Surveillance Solution automatically analyses video data to identify suspicious behaviour in real time and provides post-event forensics by indexing events.

"[T]he software platform is designed to allow monitoring and analysis of real-world events via multiple sensors, including video cameras, radar, or audio inputs," company officials said.

The IBM digital video surveillance system has already been implemented at Pathmark and Kohl's stores in the US.

"Advances in video surveillance technology have the potential to drastically reduce in-store theft and optimize the store environment to improve sales," said Pedro Ramos, assistant vice president of loss prevention, Pathmark Stores. "We are looking at the beginning of a major advance for the retail industry."

IBM claims the Smart Surveillance Solution can provide "situational awareness" of a monitored space through the use of technologies such as face capture and licence plate recognition.{moscomment}
