AT&T has amped up its U-verse IPTV service with an add-on allowing subscribers to view live television on a PC using any broadband connection.

U-verse was originally positioned as an alternative to traditional cable or satellite pay TV services. U-verse OnTheGo breaks the link with a fixed connection, and for an extra $US10 per month allows subscribers to watch nearly 30 channels wherever they have a broadband connection.

"In today's on-demand world, customers want to be able to access news and entertainment using a variety of devices," said Michael Grasso, assistant vice president-AT&T consumer marketing. "AT&T U-verse OnTheGo is an example of how we're delivering that type of capability today."

THe company claims the service, provided in collaboration with MobiTV,  is the first of its kind offered by a TV provider, and offers a 14-day free trial.

Channels available via OnTheGo include Fox News, Bloomberg, Fox Sports, and the Weather Channel.

The basic U-verse service starts at $US59 per month, including broadband Internet access.

At a later date OnTheGo will be extended to AT&T mobile phones. In Australia, Telstra's Next G mobile network already offers 16 pay tv channels, while its competitor 3 provides a dozen.{moscomment}
