Want to win the Mii popularity contest? A new Mii channel for the Nintendo Wii will let yuu do just that, with a Mario Wii game due this year, with the Wii gaining an important new fan.

Legendary Nintendo games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has given his keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, outlining information about a new Wii channel based around the cartoon Mii characters each Wii users can create for themselves, an upcoming new Wii Mario game called ‘Mario Galaxy’, Nintendo’s internal ethic on games creation and how Miyamoto’s wife is now an avid Wii fan after being disinterested for years – despite being married to one of gaming’s greatest living legends.

Although Miyamoto’s keynote started half an hour late due to seating issues, Miyamoto’s legendary showmanship had the audience glued to their seats as they listened to Miyamoto speak in Japanese with a Nintendo colleague translating his speech into English.

While some expected some truly mindblowing announcements, which some say didn't really come, what Miyamoto had to say was still very interesting indeed.

One of his proud achievements was finally converting his wife into a games console player, thanks to non-violent games such as Animal Cross and Brain Training on the Nintendo DS, and games such as Wii Sports on the Nintendo Wii, with his wife now an avid fan and a ‘true gamer’, even downloading the new Wii Voting Channel and making Mii avatars for her entire family, extended family and even their neighbors!

Miyamoto said this kind of behavior and interest in his wife was unprecedented, with “Donkey Kong” dining at their dinner table a more likely occurrence in the past. Miyamoto said: “We must always remember the human touch. After all, if we can convert my wife, we can convert anyone, right?”

The news that the Wii’s first official Mario game, ‘Super Mario Galaxy’, was getting ever close was re-confirmed, although no specific date was forthcoming. Still, it was an indication of the anticipation for some of Nintendo’s major games franchises in the community.

Miyamoto also explained that everyone at Nintendo was focused on entertainment and great games, with balance and teamwork key issues, as well as trying to entice gamers to proactively become more creative when playing. He said that “I am making games so players themselves become more creative... The core of this element is really communication”.

He also explained how he seeks to ‘see’ the reaction on gamers’ faces when they play, with the aim of bringing smiles to people’s faces, as opposed to mindless shooting games that have previously turned gamers into zombies.

He demonstrated prototype controllers for the Wii, before settling on the Wii’s current remote control design which was the result of hard work by many people at Nintendo all working together.

He also explained his never give up attitude, with Miyamoto saying that fellow Nintendo colleagues noticed that when he had an idea, he never gave up on it. Miyamoto had developed a ‘face making program’ for the original Nintendo Entertainment System, but never quite got it right.

A different developer team had been working on a version of something similar for the Nintendo DS, and when Miyamoto found out, he worked closely with the team for a few months to perfect it in the development of the Mii characters for the Wii, although he then chastised his main team for not being able to do what a different Nintendo team had succeeded at creating.

He also explained what happened to a game called Super Mario 128 which was never released, although he explained that the game had indeed been released but in a slightly different form in the game Pikmin.

At the end of his presentation, Miyamoto received a standing ovation from the assembled crowd. While some have felt his keynote wasn’t exciting, it gave a great insight into Nintendo’s culture, brought forth news of a new Wii Mii channel, an update on the first Mario Wii title, the news that his own wife had finally been converted to gaming thanks to Nintendo’s collective efforts to truly broaden gaming’s appeal across all ages, let out some secrets on what happened to previous Nintendo efforts and as always, put on a great show.
