Although Miyamoto’s keynote started half an hour late due to seating issues, Miyamoto’s legendary showmanship had the audience glued to their seats as they listened to Miyamoto speak in Japanese with a Nintendo colleague translating his speech into English.
While some expected some truly mindblowing announcements, which some say didn't really come, what Miyamoto had to say was still very interesting indeed. The news that the Wii’s first official Mario game, ‘Super Mario Galaxy’, was getting ever close was re-confirmed, although no specific date was forthcoming. Still, it was an indication of the anticipation for some of Nintendo’s major games franchises in the community.
Miyamoto also explained that everyone at Nintendo was focused on entertainment and great games, with balance and teamwork key issues, as well as trying to entice gamers to proactively become more creative when playing. He said that “I am making games so players themselves become more creative... The core of this element is really communication”. He demonstrated prototype controllers for the Wii, before settling on the Wii’s current remote control design which was the result of hard work by many people at Nintendo all working together.
He also explained his never give up attitude, with Miyamoto saying that fellow Nintendo colleagues noticed that when he had an idea, he never gave up on it. Miyamoto had developed a ‘face making program’ for the original Nintendo Entertainment System, but never quite got it right. He also explained what happened to a game called Super Mario 128 which was never released, although he explained that the game had indeed been released but in a slightly different form in the game Pikmin.
At the end of his presentation, Miyamoto received a standing ovation from the assembled crowd. While some have felt his keynote wasn’t exciting, it gave a great insight into Nintendo’s culture, brought forth news of a new Wii Mii channel, an update on the first Mario Wii title, the news that his own wife had finally been converted to gaming thanks to Nintendo’s collective efforts to truly broaden gaming’s appeal across all ages, let out some secrets on what happened to previous Nintendo efforts and as always, put on a great show. |
