The Golden Compass (known as Northern Lights in the UK), based on the first book in the award-winning trilogy, His Dark Materials by British author Philip Pullman sees a parallel world ruled by giant armoured bears. Witches cruise the artic skies and humans' deepest essences manifest themselves as Familers known as daemons.

Players can assume the role of Lyra, a young girl, along with her daemon Pantalaimon (Pan), collecting items, confronting and evading the mysterious organisation known as The Gobblers.

Making use of her daemon, Lyra will attempt to rescue here kidnapped friend.  Iorek Byrnison, the great polar bear that joins Lyra on her quest will also be a playable character that Lyra can ride during the 13 locations and mini games that will encompass the game world.

Sega are bringing PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, Nintendo DS and PC versions to the gaming public in time for Christmas 2007.  The actual game development will be performed by Shiny Entertainment, who have been making great "outside the square" games right from their inception.  MDK is still a favourite.
