ASUS has effectively abandoned Linux and stated a power user would use Windows instead. This backflip stands against the history of their successful Eee netbook line. Nevertheless, ASUS’ loss will be the gain of more savvy players.

Those of us who work in technology have a jargon all of our very own. We know the difference between CPUs and GPUs, between SSD and HDD, let alone HD and SDTV! Yet, our users are flat out calling everything "the hard drive."

A remarkable court case in New Jersey saw the source code for the Alcotest 7110 MKIII-C reviewed by an independent software firm. The findings showed terrible bugs and technical deficiencies raising serious questions about the reliability of the devices and previous judgments issued. This is why open source is a must for accountability.

Today, May 10th 2009, is Mother's day for many countries around the world from Anguilla to Zimbabwe. How fitting, then, to offer a tribute to Linus Torvalds, the "mother" of Linux.

The newest operating system out right now is Ubuntu 9.04 which has as one of its options Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) designed for, you guessed it, netbooks. Earlier this week I loaded Windows 7RC on an Acer Aspire One. Let's try UNR on the exact same machine.

In a shock announcement, Microsoft has today taken majority ownership of software house Novell. This immediately gives the Redmond giant control of Novell's intellectual property assets including the legal copyright over UNIX. Already Red Hat and Canonical (Ubuntu) have expressed their expectation Microsoft will aggressively seek to eradicate all distributions save for Microsoft Linux Vista, formerly SUSE. (APRIL FOOL JOKE!!)

Last week a brand new Linux kernel came out, 2.6.29 released from the hands of Linus Torvalds himself. Besides a cutesy new mascot this edition comes with a host of new features that highlight future directions. There are two new file systems, improved graphics and WiFi support, faster boot times and more.
