Friday, 28 December 2007
Congratulations to all the new Christmas owners of the year's hottest subnotebook, the ASUS Eee, putting Linux square in the mainstream and right in the hands of the masses. Here's a collection of tiny – but dead useful – hints and tips to help you get the most out of it.

Restoring and updating the ASUS Eee Linux PC PDF E-mail
Wednesday, 19 December 2007
Well, I’ve been hornswaggled. My lovely brand-new ASUS Eee from Myer may have been a shop-soiled demo model. It wasn’t a virgin system but one that had played the field with many. Never worry: here’s how to take the ASUS Eee back to the complete factory image at any time, along with how to update the apps and Xandros Linux distro that it uses.

The ASUS Eee Linux PC from the outside in PDF E-mail
Sunday, 16 December 2007
I have one. I’m just one in ... well, quite a few thousand, really – but nevertheless, their supply has been surpassed by the demand. Yes, I’m talking about the ASUS Eee PC, the diminutive priced highly popular subnotebook which has brought Linux to the masses. Here are my complete first impressions and experiences, from the box through power on.

Real world Linux programming PDF E-mail
Tuesday, 11 December 2007
Here’s a genuine app that I wrote for an ISP. They needed a way to let their help desk staff perform system administration functions in a controlled manner, through a simple menu of choices. The solution was pretty simple: a controlled environment with no shell access plus a series of programs and scripts that were elevated if required by sudo.

Firefox hero: Legends of FOSS PDF E-mail
Thursday, 06 December 2007
There’s a software title out there really rocking the charts. It’s casting a spell over all who use it, bringing fun and freedom in its train around the globe. Battle against some of the largest empires. Unleash your inner spirit. What – no, we’re not talking about that game, but Firefox, the lean, clean and mean web browser. Here’s a collection of terrific plug-ins that will really enhance your web experience, for developers and end-users alike.

Compiling and contributing to the Linux/open source subversion PDF E-mail
Monday, 03 December 2007
Many of the best-organised software projects around the world are the legions of free and open source offerings. This is in part due to one reason, namely the tight use of source code control and versioning systems to keep the code base clean and in a known state. If you’ve wanted access to the latest build of your favourite apps or if you want to contribute your own mods, the key is to master the source control suite. I’ll introduce Subversion and show you it’s actually pretty simple.

In the black: Why Linux makes financial sense PDF E-mail
Wednesday, 28 November 2007
Last week I touched on some Microsoft backflipping over Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) when it comes to Linux. It had been claimed that although Linux was a free operating system, Windows had a lower overall cost with all factors considered due to its greater ease of administration. Yet, this is no longer the case, with Microsoft’s server line now using a Bash-inspired command line system called PowerShell.

Real answers to the question “Can you run your business on Linux and open source?” PDF E-mail
Monday, 26 November 2007
A friend said to me recently that “Firefox is for the home, Internet Explorer is for the office.” His comments reflect commonly found stigma and fears that free and open source software – and Linux too – are not suitable for a business environment. Let me set the record straight, giving real feedback from companies who have made the switch and don’t look back.

Linux on the line: musings on the CLI / GUI flip-flop PDF E-mail
Wednesday, 21 November 2007
People are a funny lot. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure. And one person’s primary means of instructing a computer is met with disdain by another. There’s a perennial battle between mousers and keyboard jockeys, and “what’s in” appears to go in cycles.
