Toshiba’s new 512GB SSD gets launched – in its own notebooks

Back on December 18 last year, Toshiba announced it would have a 512GB SSD in volume production by around April this year. That promise fulfilled, Toshiba has now launched the world’s first notebook with a 2.5-inch 512GB solid state drive, but as with all cutting edge technology, being the first with the latest will cost you a pretty penny!

 
Windows 7 launch date “sort-of” revealed

Although Microsoft has been officially saying that Windows 7 would launch “3 years” after the general availability of its predecessor, Windows Vista, thus signifying a January 2010 release timeframe, Microsoft has now announced it expects Windows 7 to launch before 2009’s “holiday season” in a move that has been long expected.

Rumours suggest the top-end Xbox 360 Elite may soon be phased out by Microsoft as retailers complain the Elite models take longer to sell than the cheaper Arcade and Pro editions, although Microsoft is said not to have yet made any final decision.

Windows 7 beta build 7048 32-bit leaked

Eee Top – top in touch but top in price, too?

The touch revolution arrived long ago but has been getting refined ever since, and while the iPhone has shown the way, the Eee Top aims to bring touch screens to the masses at a price that’s cheaper than HP’s touch screen computers but still expensive compared to netbooks. Given the Eee Top uses an Atom processor, can we expect similar pricing for touch capable netbooks, too?

 
Windows 7 beta downloads to continue ‘til Feb 10

Still want to try out the Windows 7 beta OS, but haven’t downloaded it yet? Microsoft has extended the download period from late January until February 10 for the public, although the cut-off date doesn’t apply to MSDN and TechNet members. Is the download extension any cause for controversy?

 
Newest Mac anti-virus/malware software turns 1.0 (and 1.3)

Although many Mac users are of the opinion they don’t need anti-virus protection, security companies keep on delivering it, with PC Tools marking two important milestones: version 1.0 of its iAntiVirus software for Mac, after a successful beta process, and a very nice $0 price for home users - although business users are expected to pay.

Office 14 alpha screenshots show ribbon everywhere

When Microsoft launched Office 2007, it also introduced the new “ribbon” interface, hated by some and loved by others. Screenshots of the Office 14 suite, said to be due for release in 2010, now show the ribbon is everywhere – but will Microsoft update Powerpoint so it matches and betters the “cinema transitions” in Apple’s Keynote?
