The update for PwnageTool 2.0.2 to jailbreak iPhone 2G and 3G models,
and unlock the iPhone 2G, was moved to the iPhone Dev Team’s “sparkle
update system” when a serious bug was noticed – and the update removed.
But the sparkling will start happening once more in a few hours!

Original iPhone and iPhone 3G owners wanting to update to iPhone OS
2.0.1 while maintaining a jailbroken status don’t have much longer to
wait, with the iPhone Dev Team saying the software should arrive
“Friday”, although that’s likely Saturday for Australians.

Got an IceTV subscription and a compatible PVR, Windows Media Center PC
or IceTV on your Mac? Sure, IceTV has allowed mobile phone users to
browser to its “remoterecord” website to do the same thing, but why not
create a dedicated iPhone app – and a Facebook app to come soon, too?

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) has reached a “key moment”
with August 22 set as the date by which carriers must submit the
remaining “network information” the Government wants to send to NBN
bidders, so they can then start finalising their NBN proposals. But as
telecoms analyst Paul Budde states, the FttN proposed for Australia is
already out of date, with FttH the preferred standard being rolled out
overseas.

(Updated since publication:) iPhone
OS 2.0.1 has arrived, promising faster surfing speeds, snappier program
operation and lots of other as-yet unknown bug fixes, but the big
question for unlocked and jailbroken iPhone
owners on OS 2.0 is whether or not it’s safe to upgrade. Here’s what I
did to make it work, although any attempt you do at trying the same is
at your own risk!

3D TV
has been promised as the “next big thing” for years, but while
consumers can now buy one, play selected 3D games through a PC and
watch 2D DVD converted to “3D” through a PC, as well as 3D movies, all
with special glasses, 3D television programming isn’t here yet.

Virgin Mobile, a subsidiary of Optus, has finally launched the iPhone
3G as widely predicted, but with the surprise of a ginormous 5GB data
plan – the first decent iPhone data plan yet. But with pricing for the
16GB and the 8GB model on the $100 plan identical, why would anyone
bother with the 8GB unit? And what about concerns that Virgin Mobile’s
broadband network is “not reliable"?

The Aussie mobile data revolution is affecting even Telstra, perhaps
not at the much faster speeds than we’re seeing at 3 Mobile, Optus and
Vodafone, but affecting them nevertheless, boosting the $29/80MB plan
to 300MB, amongst others. But when will Telstra announce data cap
increase for its more expensive 1GB and 3GB plans?

3 Mobile has launched iPhone specific plans for those with unlocked
iPhone 3G models, challenging the incumbents Optus, Vodafone and
Telstra with 1GB and 2GB plans at low rates – but given how often a 3G
iPhone can drop to 2GB for data, is 3 Mobile worth the risk?
