Saturday, 30 May 2009
Microsoft has finally confirmed its crazy 3-app limit idea is being removed from Win 7 Starter Edition, now letting netbook owners run as many apps as they want, but Microsoft’s mentality in still offering the Starter Edition at all is still the real problem!

Friday, 29 May 2009
Basking in the new launch limelight is Bing.com, Microsoft’s new search thing which aims to massively boost its share of the search engine market, but while things look good at the launch event, the real battle gets down to business in less than a week!

Will Bing bring Microsoft search supremacy?
Friday, 29 May 2009
Steve Ballmer is set to shortly announce “Bing”, its new Google-killing search engine with such amazing search simplicity and satisfaction that we will all be truly stunned. But will Bing just bring useless search bling, or will it be the real search thing – and does the Bing logo look just like that from British Paints?!?

Vodafone brings Visual Voicemail to Australian iPhone 3Gs at last
Wednesday, 27 May 2009
Although Vodafone proclaims it is “thrilled to be on the foot-front of innovation” in bringing Visual Voicemail to Australians more than 2 years after AT&T customers enjoyed it on day one, Vodafone’s tardiness is at least much faster than Telstra or Optus who still don’t offer it at all.

The power of alert users and the press has uncovered an Optus contract snafu surrounding slowdown speeds when broadband limits are reached, with Optus only delivering half of what was promised. Will Optus ever get it right?

Is Microsoft listening on Windows 7 pricing?
Tuesday, 26 May 2009
A reader asks if my plea to Microsoft to offer realistic Windows pricing will ever be listened to. Of course Microsoft is listening, but will they do anything beyond announcing higher prices at the worst possible moment in history?

Windows 7 netbook performance: can MS make it faster?
Monday, 25 May 2009
Although Microsoft has reportedly dropped the ludicrous idea of limiting its Win 7 OS to running three main apps, starter version or no, my own testing of Win 7 RC on a couple of netbooks shows it to be slower than I expected. What’s going on?

Super-DVD 5D disc is 5 to 10 years away… meh
Sunday, 24 May 2009
All the brouhaha about Blu-ray needing to watch out because researchers have created a disc that can store 1.6TB of data today (and 10TB to come) is a bit of a load of bollocks, with the technology up to a decade away from commercialisation and even 10TB due to look teensy-weensy by then.

Toshiba tunes up new netbook: the NB200

Tuesday, 19 May 2009
Although Asus originally intended its first Eee PC 701 to be used in an educational setting, rather than being the catalyst that ignited the netbook revolution, Dell is the first company to have properly designed a netbook that can withstand the rigours of teenage and classroom life – and have outfitted it with a(n optional) touch-screen, while also making Ubuntu 9.04 an Australian netbook option for the first time.

Waiting for the 2009 iPhone 3.0

On June 8, the world will learn even more about the iPhone OS 3.0, Mac OS X “Snow Leopard” 10.6, and hopefully some clues to the actual 2009 iPhone and other iPhone-like designs at Apple’s WWDC. So far, the rumours around the iPhone 3.0 hardware sound a lot less “insanely great” than the iPhone 3.0 OS itself…
