The update for PwnageTool 2.0.2 to jailbreak iPhone 2G and 3G models, and unlock the iPhone 2G, was moved to the iPhone Dev Team’s “sparkle update system” when a serious bug was noticed – and the update removed. But the sparkling will start happening once more in a few hours!

Original iPhone and iPhone 3G owners wanting to update to iPhone OS 2.0.1 while maintaining a jailbroken status don’t have much longer to wait, with the iPhone Dev Team saying the software should arrive “Friday”, although that’s likely Saturday for Australians.

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) has reached a “key moment” with August 22 set as the date by which carriers must submit the remaining “network information” the Government wants to send to NBN bidders, so they can then start finalising their NBN proposals. But as telecoms analyst Paul Budde states, the FttN proposed for Australia is already out of date, with FttH the preferred standard being rolled out overseas.

(Updated since publication:) iPhone OS 2.0.1 has arrived, promising faster surfing speeds, snappier program operation and lots of other as-yet unknown bug fixes, but the big question for unlocked and jailbroken iPhone owners on OS 2.0 is whether or not it’s safe to upgrade. Virgin Mobile, a subsidiary of Optus, has finally launched the iPhone 3G as widely predicted, but with the surprise of a ginormous 5GB data plan – the first decent iPhone data plan yet. But with pricing for the 16GB and the 8GB model on the $100 plan identical, why would anyone bother with the 8GB unit? And what about concerns that Virgin Mobile’s broadband network is “not reliable"?

The Aussie mobile data revolution is affecting even Telstra, perhaps not at the much faster speeds than we’re seeing at 3 Mobile, Optus and Vodafone, but affecting them nevertheless, boosting the $29/80MB plan to 300MB, amongst others. But when will Telstra announce data cap increase for its more expensive 1GB and 3GB plans?

Palm Centro hits two-million sales mark, “beats” iPhone

Smartphone maker Palm, which once enjoyed the incredible media, consumer and developer attention currently being lavished upon the iPhone, has shown its far from out of the race by shipping more than 2 million of its Centro models, while an ad network report shows more mobile Internet ads are served to Palm devices than iPhones.
