Busy week for STS-127 ISS mission and LRO/LCROSS Moon mission E-mail

NASA announced June 15, 2009, that the space shuttle Endeavour will lift off on June 17 for the Space Station, followed by the launch, one day later, of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite for its very important mission to study the Moon up close and personal.

 
Japanese Kaguya seen crashing into Moon E-mail

AT 3:25 a.m. Japanese time (1825 GMT) the Kaguya spacecraft made a controlled hard crash onto the Moon ending a successful mission to comprehensively map the lunar surface. It was seen on Earth by professional and amateur astronomers.

 
Hypothesis says we have extra 1.3 billion years on Earth E-mail

A Caltech paper has stated that we can live on Earth for another 2.3 billion years, over double the current estimate. Because of this new hypothesis (if proven true) it should also mean that we have over twice the chance of finding intelligent life out there in the universe.

The Japanese government announced June 11, 2009 that its Hayabusa spacecraft will be sent on a course that will simulate the trajectory of an asteroid so its astronomers can improve their abilities to track near Earth objects that could potentially hit Earth.

Lightning "dances" on edge of space: Sprites E-mail

On the wispy boundary where Earth’s atmosphere fades away and outer space takes charge, a type of lightning occurs that, until they were photographed by a University of Minnesota scientist and followed up with images from NASA Space Shuttle astronauts, were not believed to be real.
