Sam Varghese
Subscribe to the RSS After flirting with tech from 1989 onwards, Sam Varghese began to experiment with Linux in 1998. A couple of years later, he began using the Debian distribution as a single-boot system for his personal use. From that point onwards his interest grew and he has since written widely about free and open source software, with a great deal of his writings based on his own experiences, rather than anecdotal evidence. Open Sauce will focus on a genre of software that is present everywhere but rarely acknowledged; a genre that has little eye-candy but does most of the heavy lifting; a genre that is designed and written by people whose accomplishments are only occasionally recognised. Above all this blog will follow the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Stupid.

MySQL spreads its wings
by Sam Varghese

The year of the Linux desktop!
by Sam Varghese
Tuesday, 02 January 2007
You'll see these words in more than one article penned by the pundits. Every year since about 2003 has been called the year of the Linux desktop - and then, when that fails to transpire, those who predict these things set about rehashing their predictions for the next year.

Shill season
by Sam Varghese
Friday, 15 December 2006
It's often difficult to figure out the motivation behind a particular study - until one finds out who has commissioned and paid for it. The so-called tech consulting companies would love it if the consumer believes that they have conducted an "independent" study. The worrying thing is that not many people blow their cover.

You know that a company is on its last legs trying to prove something when it turns to surveys in order to drive home a point. Novell has reached that stage in trying to plug its deal with Microsoft.

The Linux name can be profitable
by Sam Varghese
Monday, 11 December 2006
A non-profit organisation that describes itself as "the centre of gravity of Linux" has just gone through its second round of sackings in as many years though on the surface it does not seem to be exactly short of funds.

GNU/Linux: anywhere and everywhere
by Sam Varghese
