Sam Varghese
Subscribe to the RSS After flirting with tech from 1989 onwards, Sam Varghese began to experiment with Linux in 1998. A couple of years later, he began using the Debian distribution as a single-boot system for his personal use. From that point onwards his interest grew and he has since written widely about free and open source software, with a great deal of his writings based on his own experiences, rather than anecdotal evidence. Open Sauce will focus on a genre of software that is present everywhere but rarely acknowledged; a genre that has little eye-candy but does most of the heavy lifting; a genre that is designed and written by people whose accomplishments are only occasionally recognised. Above all this blog will follow the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Stupid.

by Sam Varghese
Tuesday, 18 September 2007
If any bookmaker is offering good odds on the SCO Group surviving into 2009, it may well be worth a punt. After the company filed for bankruptcy on Friday, there aren't many who will bank on the company being around that long.

by Sam Varghese
Friday, 14 September 2007
The argument over dual-licensed code, which was festering between the GPL and BSD communities, has drifted off the radar for most - but certainly not for Theo de Raadt, head of the OpenBSD project.

by Sam Varghese
Friday, 31 August 2007
This month, the GNOME project - one of two main choices when it comes to desktop environments for Linux - celebrates 10 years of existence. It was founded on August 15, 1997, by Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena Quintero.

Feisty in wireless land
by Sam Varghese
Tuesday, 28 August 2007
Recently I've been reading a lot about how well Ubuntu works on laptops, particularly when it comes to handling wireless connections - something that is generally a problem under Linux due to a number of factors, the primary one being the paucity of drivers for most cards.

Linux Foundation's first commandment: respect Microsoft
by Sam Varghese
Thursday, 16 August 2007
On April 1 this year, I wrote a spoof headlined "Ballmer joins Linux Foundation board." Considering the statements that were reported last week as emanating from the executive director of the same foundation, Jim Zemlin, I wonder if my tale will still be considered a spoof after a few years.
