Cornered!
Cornered! is a blog devoted, most of the time anyway, to telecommunications: local and global issues, technology, people and trends from the perspective of someone who's been reporting, analysing and commenting on the industry since the dark ages (BC - before competition). Sometimes serious, sometimes flippant, sometimes frivolous. Controversial, analytical, informative, amusing, but never boring; a vehicle for examinations of important issues and observations on my encounters and experiences in an industry where polarised views and hyperbole are the norm.

More selective reporting of OECD stats
Tuesday, 17 July 2007
I am no doubt starting to sound like a cracked record, but the selective use of OECD broadband data by our politicians to bolster their party's position is really starting to rankle.

3 cuts HSDPA prices: 1GB for $29 per month
Monday, 16 July 2007
Just the other day I speculated that HSDPA data prices could come down, and Hutchison has made this come true, announcing a package offering 1GB of combined upload and download per month for $29 on its HSDPA network.

Australia's lagging broadband: blame Telstra
Monday, 16 July 2007
After the last debacle where politicians seized on 'statistics' comparing Australia's broadband performance against those of other OECD countries, only to find the data refuted by the OECD, you would think the would be more careful about making knee-jerk reactions to figures comparing Australia to other OECD countries without first checking the facts.

Japanese mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo - one of few carriers left in the world that still retains a large cutting edge in-house R&D facility -  has announced that is working to develop a 'Super 3G' cellular technology capable of delivering 300Mbps downstream. However the announcement raises many questions.

AAPT & iProvide: one big telcos approach to small business
Sunday, 15 July 2007
My column on Telstra's latest initiative to provide complex telecommunications services to the small business market  struck a chord: a letter from Deena Shiff, head of Telstra Business and an email from Phil Sykes, CEO of iProvide.

The jury is still out on the economics of HSDPA services
Friday, 13 July 2007
It's a shame that Australia's dominant fixed line carrier, Telstra, is also the largest mobile operator both by subscriber numbers and, more importantly, by coverage. Because this prevents us from seeing what might happen if a cellular network operator using HSDPA went head to head in competition with a fixed broadband operator.

D-Link's security box: every home (and small office) should have one
Wednesday, 11 July 2007
if this little security gadget lives up to the claims made for it, at $239, every home should have one: as well as every small business.

Linksys tipped to enter WiMAX CPE market
Wednesday, 27 June 2007
Among all the claims and counter claims of the WiMAX and 3G/HSPA camps is the claim that, thanks to higher volumes, HSPA user devices will be much cheaper. The WiMAX camp argues otherwise, and the entry of a very large player like Linksys in the home/SOHO networking market would certainly drive prices down.

Government gears up to spend yet more on rural comms
Tuesday, 26 June 2007
Communications minister Helen Coonan has just announced plans to spend $1 billion of taxpayers' money to bring high speed broadband services to 99 percent of the population by mid 2009, but she's not going to stop there, and Opel Networks could be in prime position to get almost half as much again in three years time.
