A not so junky netMac next up at Macworld? E-mail
by Stan Beer
Monday, 15 December 2008
A couple of months ago Steve Jobs described netbooks as $500 pieces of junk, presumably not worthy of Apple. However, Jobs also kept his options open and promised some interesting ideas if the netbook market ever did take-off - and take-off it has. Will we see those interesting ideas come to fruition in the form of a netMac at Macworld 2009?

Windows you done stole my netbook market away: Linux E-mail
by Stan Beer
Sunday, 14 December 2008
For a brief moment in time, between October 2007 and April 2008, thanks to the Asus Eee PC it really did seem as if desktop Linux was finally going to have its moment in the sun. Unfortunately for the Linux crowd, however, Asus, Acer and other hardware makers realised they could sell many more netbooks if they did deals with those nasty folks in Redmond.

by Stan Beer
Wednesday, 10 December 2008
Some worrying signs concerning our basic freedoms have begun to emerge throughout the free world, with the UK and Australia at the forefront of a disturbing trend to censor the Internet. Two recent events indicate an erosion of our rights as citizens within a free society.

Why the IBM Linux desktop will fail E-mail
by Stan Beer
Sunday, 07 December 2008
If one was to believe IBM, the days of the Microsoft desktop are numbered, soon to be cut short by a combination of Canonical's Ubuntu Linux, IBM's Lotus range of office applications and a virtual desktop from Virtual Bridges. The trouble is IBM's solution is nothing new and addresses none of the issues associated with moving away from Microsoft.

Telstra makes mockery of NBN tender process E-mail
by Stan Beer
Thursday, 27 November 2008
It really makes no difference whether a Howard Coalition or a Rudd Labor Government is in power, Telstra obviously considers itself answerable to no-one. What other conclusion can be drawn from the monolithic telco's action of answering the Government's RFP to build the National Broadband Network with a non-compliant 12-page document?

OLPC launches $700 lap toy promotion in Australia E-mail
by Stan Beer
Wednesday, 26 November 2008
The so-called $100 third world one laptop per child (OLPC) vision of Nicholas Negroponte has now become the around $700 (including GST and shipping charges) two-for-one "lap toy" Christmas promotion in Australia.

The extremely vocal desktop Linux tinority E-mail
by Stan Beer
Monday, 17 November 2008
Neither Ubuntu nor any other brand of Linux is ever going to make it as a mainstream desktop operating system. Listen to a roar of protests from some of the millions of Linux desktop users around the world. Very loud they are but in the scheme of things their numbers are tiny - they are a tinority.

No more Google Schmoogle as Sensis maps future direction in search E-mail
by Stan Beer
Monday, 03 November 2008
The announcement today that Sensis and Google have joined forces to put all of its Yellow directory business listings on Google Maps and that it will replace its own search technology with Google's signals two things. Sensis is finally getting real and it has accepted that search is not its business.

Steve "Footnote" Ballmer in denial over Google Docs E-mail
by Stan Beer
Monday, 20 October 2008
As I write this article using Google Docs, I can't help wondering whether Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer really believed when he publicly told two Gartner analysts last week on stage that nobody uses it. Is Ballmer in denial or privately sweating bullets?

Apple plus Willy Wonka Jobs equals cult E-mail
by Stan Beer
Sunday, 19 October 2008
I had a curious dream last night in which Steve Jobs was giving a demonstration of a new Apple product to a few journalists. The demonstration went haywire and Steve was so embarrassed that he offered one of the journalists a once in a lifetime opportunity of an exclusive warts and all interview. Although an improbable scenario, the dream illustrated a major problem at Apple.

The notebook is dead, long live the netbook! E-mail
by Stan Beer
Wednesday, 15 October 2008
News flash to Apple, announcements about expensive, oversized aluminium clad futuristic looking notebook computers are just so yesteryear. If you want to grab people's attention these days give them something they can afford and just as importantly something they can use - give them a netbook.

As goes the economy so goes Apple E-mail
by Stan Beer
Tuesday, 14 October 2008
Apple Inc had better hope that the recent surge on Wall Street and global stock markets is not just a flash in the pan because if not 2009 could see the Cupertino colossus on the nose. If you think I'm kidding think again.

Apple Store is for looking not buying E-mail
by Stan Beer
Monday, 21 July 2008
The news that consumers are still lining up to get into the new Sydney Apple store is astounding, but if any of them are actually buying anything other than an iPhone, they're crazy.
