For decades the developed world has been looking to the global scientific community for ways to break its dangerous addiction to fossil fuels, particularly oil. Thus, it comes as a surprise that one of the few solutions that shows real promise has come not from physicists and chemists, but from a team of Silicon Valley engineers.

 
32-bit Vista support for Blu-ray, HD DVD still unclear E-mail

ImageAfter a Microsoft senior manager let slip at a Sydney developer's conference that only 64-bit versions of Windows Vista will be able to play high-definition videos on Blu-ray or HD DVD, Microsoft rushed to clarify his statements. However, the clarification, which states that the senior manager was wrong, leaves unanswered questions.

For the past month or so, a debate has been raging througout scientific circles as to whether the world called Pluto in the outer reaches of our solar system is a planet. Why this debate has been necessary is not exactly clear but it appears that Pluto has been kicked out of the planets club - the P9 has become the P8.

It seems that the media has gone bananas over a new portable music player, the Sansa e280 a new portable music player from Flash RAM maker SanDisk. The SanDisk player has 8GB of flash for US$249, around the same price of the 4GB iPod Nano so iPod is in trouble. Baloney.

 
Microsoft offers Firefox help to run on Vista but why? E-mail

Microsoft is not a company renowned for helping serious competitors. However, the head of the software company's open source software lab, Sam Ramji, has said publicly in an online blog that he will help the open source Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client teams to get their products running on Windows Vista.

 
Microsoft ready to go with Vista incentives before January E-mail

Two things are clear about the impending release of Windows Vista. One is that come hell or high water Microsoft intends to get the new operating system out the door in January 2007. The second is that Microsoft will be pulling out all stops to get Vista on desktops in January by offering free or at least heavily discounted upgrades to 2006 holiday season buyers.

Last month everyone was talking about MySpace. This month, no one can say enough of the online phenomenon that is known as YouTube. And from a brief perusal of the site which is basically a vast repository of video clips, it's easy to see why.
