No DRM and no renting seems to be the new mantra as the charismatic Apple boss, Steve Jobs, continues to snub his nose at the power brokers of the recorded music industry. In the latest such thrust into the solar plexes of the record moguls, Jobs indicated to Reuters that he had no interest in implementing music subscriptions on iTunes.

Having had a go at a few more Linux installations than the average newbie, I can say that Ubuntu is probably about as easy an install as it's going to get. Sure you can run into hardware driver issues but Ubuntu advocates are right when they say it's probably just as easy and maybe easier than installing Windows. However, at this point in time it needs to be.

The backdating of options isn't illegal but not disclosing and accounting for them properly to shareholders and regulators certainly is. In the case of Apple CEO Steve Jobs, 7.5 million backdated options he received in 2001 have threatened to bring him down but an examination of the matter by the San Jose Mercury News predicts that he will probably be exonerated of blame.

One word around town is that Michael Dell himself uses the latest version of Ubuntu, version 7.04 (Feisty Fawn), which is just out of beta today. Another word around town is the Dell is getting set to release some product pre-loaded with Linux by the end of April. If so, any bets as to which distro Dell puts to market first?

Eric Schmidt's repeated denials that Google intends to compete with Microsoft in the office productivity space is beginning sound like the utterances of the CEOs that insist they have no interest in the current stock prices of their companies. Their job is to run the business well and let the stock price take care of itself. Except we all know CEOs watch the stock price and Google isn't developing its office suite just for fun.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, two announcements, one from Microsoft and the other from Adobe, has marked the beginning of a war over what technology consumers will user to play back videos on their computers. This is a war that will be difficult for Microsoft to win.

I remember a couple of months ago being warned by an acquaintance from the Linux crowd that within that community there are some very closed minds. Never has that remark hit home as hard as in the past two weeks. However, it appears that winds of change are afoot, with a growing rift between some old guard stalwarts and the stewards of the increasingly popular Ubuntu distribution.

The news that iPods equipped with Wi-Fi are imminent has raised speculation about how Apple intends to make use of the new wireless capabilities of its fastest selling device. Some commentators believe that wireless data transfer is the most probable use. However, this seems unlikely given previous comments from Apple. Music sharing - now that's another story.

Those of you who are considering moving away from Windows to Linux for your desktop may need to be dispelled of a certain myth. No matter what distribution you ultimately choose to download, Linux is by no means free of financial cost.

The news that Apple has once again pushed back the release of its new operating system Mac OS X Leopard in order to meet its commitment to bring iPhone to market suggests that the company, which in January dropped Computer from its name, is now torn between product lines. It also reveals that Apple has reached the limits of its human resources.

My last article on the experiences of moving from Windows to Kubuntu Linux brought out the best and the worst of the Linux community judging by some of the responses it received. While many Linux users were eager to jump in with helpful advice, unfortunately there were too many what I would call abusive Ubuntu fanboys who in my opinion are actually hindering rather than helping the progress of Ubuntu and Linux in general.

For all those gamer purists that insist that the Wii is a pure gaming device, Nintendo is sorry to disappoint but its new wonder box has the potential of being so much more.

Here in Australia we saw the writing on the wall for the cheaper model PlayStation 3 when stores informed us from the outset they would only be selling the 60GB version. Given the outrageous AUD$1000 price tag of the high end model, some thought it was a stupid decision. However, except for its pricing, Sony was right.
