What do you do if someone writes something bad about you or your company on a social networking site? Whatever you do, don't try to sue the owners of the site because you're likely to merely compound your problems, according to a senior researcher.

by Stan Beer
Saturday, 27 October 2007
An IDC report on new x86 server shipments in the US has created waves of joy at Redmond and howls of protest in open source circles. According to IDC, Windows is now growing its server market share at the expense of Linux, which has picked all the low hanging Unix fruit.

Windows on XO? Not on your OLPC life! E-mail
by Stan Beer
Saturday, 27 October 2007
The word from Microsoft is that the company is devoting "non trivial" resources to develop a version of Windows XP that will run on the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project's XO computer. Is Microsoft really seeking third world domination at any cost? can OLPC resist the dollar temptations Microsoft is sure to throw its way?

Microsoft finally admits fault for PDF attacks E-mail
by Stan Beer
Saturday, 27 October 2007
There we were thinking that Adobe was at fault because its Acrobat reader had a vulnerability that exposed users to bad PDF files filled with malwares sent in spam when all along it was yet another vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. Microsoft has belatedly admitted that it's to blame and is working on a fix but for many it may be too late as spam with dodgy PDF files is hitting mailboxes by tens of thousands.

With both MySpace and YouTube off the market, the hottest property on the Web right now is social networking site Facebook, said to be valued at a massive US$15 billion by suitors such as Microsoft and Google. The latest liaison for the site with 50 million fresh faces on its books is with RIM, purveyor of the Blackberry, the smartphone of choice for business professionals.

Security software vendor McAfee has shipped its new Total Protection 2008 PC security package, claiming a number of industry firsts, including proactive security for mobile phones, instant messaging and deferrment of resource intensive security tasks when users are watching videos, playing games or giving presentations. Xbox is vital for HD DVD survival E-mail
by Stan Beer
Wednesday, 24 October 2007
I have absolutely no idea whether the story over on Smarthouse about the development of a new Xbox incorporating an HD DVD drive is true or just wistful musing on the part of a Singaporean Toshiba executive. However, if HD DVD is to have any chance of winning the format war, then the idea is a project whose time is long overdue.

by Stan Beer
Wednesday, 24 October 2007
The keynote address of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer yesterday at the CTIA Wireless conference in San Francisco in which he outlined a grand vision of emulating Windows' desktop computer dominance in the mobile devices space sounded nice in theory. Does the vision bear any relation to reality or is it merely a delusional fantasy?

World Solar Challenge may need a dose of reality E-mail
by Stan Beer
Tuesday, 23 October 2007
While some may make light of a bevvy of strange looking shiny vehicles worming their way down a 3,000 km highway through central Australia, there is nothing wacky about the 20th World Solar Challenge taking place this week from Darwin to Adelaide. With each passing year, the cars have become better, faster and more energy efficient to the point where observer bemusement has been replaced by thoughtful contemplation.

by Stan Beer
Monday, 22 October 2007
Since Microsoft released Windows 95, the company's biggest money spinner has been going downhill faster than a granny strapped to roller blades on the slopes of Sydney or San Francisco. The software giant has now promised than in 2010 we will see a much leaner Windows. Does that mean in 2015 we can expect to see the first Winix OS?
