Optus has reported revenues of $2.22 billion for its second quarter, to 30 September; a 7.4 percent increase on the same period last year. EBITDA grew 6.4 percent to $509 million and net profit increased 22 percent to $152 million. The percentages of Optus' revenue and EBITDA attributable to its mobile business continue to grow and have now reached 62 percent and 68 percent respectively.

Michael Lee, a communications minister in the Labor Government, has been appointed chair of Communications Alliance, effective from 1 January 2010. He will replace Neville Stevens who is stepping down after seven years in the post.

Some of Australia's biggest brand names - Vodafone Hutchison and Coca Cola - have fallen foul of the Spam Act over their involvement in a Coca Cola SMS marketing campaign, with VHA paying the ACMA $110,000 and Coca Cola receiving a formal warning.

Juniper Research is predicting that, by 2014, one in six cellphone subscribers globally with have phones equipped with near field communications and able to be used as a contactless payment device. In the meantime, Giesecke & Devrient has come up with a simpler solution that turns any cellphone into a contactless credit card or debit card, after a fashion.
