HP is to purchase switch and router maker, 3Com, for $US2.7 billion in cash, a move that it says will "transform the networking industry" and "underscore its next-generation data centre strategy centre strategy built on the convergence of servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services."

SP Telemedia to pay $373m in cash for Pipe Networks

SP Telemedia (ASX: SOT) has made a $373m cash offer to buy Pipe Networks (ASX: PWK) which operates an extensive network of optical fibre cables and data centres in Australian capital cities and which owns the newly-opened PPC-1 submarine fibre cable from Sydney to Guam.

 
Logitech to buy video specialist LifeSize

PC peripheral specialist Logitech International is to acquire privately held videoconferencing specialist, LifeSize Communications for $US405 million in cash in a move designed to take high definition videoconferencing and video communications to the small enterprise and consumer markets.

 
Optus now even more a mobile company

Optus has reported revenues of $2.22 billion for its second quarter, to 30 September; a 7.4 percent increase on the same period last year. EBITDA grew 6.4 percent to $509 million and net profit increased 22 percent to $152 million. The percentages of Optus' revenue and EBITDA attributable to its mobile business continue to grow and have now reached 62 percent and 68 percent respectively.

 
Former comms minister Michael Lee to chair Comms Alliance

Michael Lee, a communications minister in the Labor Government, has been appointed chair of Communications Alliance, effective from 1 January 2010. He will replace Neville Stevens who is stepping down after seven years in the post.
 

 
It's an ill wind: OECD says GFC has boosted ecommerce

According to the OECD, while the retail sector globally has been hit hard by the global financial crisis, e-commerce has fared well and has seen continuing growth in many countries. But it warns that more needs to be done to strengthen people's trust in buying online.
