Microsoft bug receives US-CERT alert E-mail

In a rare acknowledgement from a US Government agency of a critical software security bug, the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), has issued an alert about one of the critical bugs in Microsoft Windows addressed in the software company's August Patch Tuesday fixes.

Last week, Microsoft flagged that there would be another 12 holes in its Windows and Office software to plug with patches today. It was just a matter of how many of them were critical. The news to hand is that most of the vulnerabilities were critical, which means someone could gain control of your computer without you doing anything if they exploited the vulnerabilities.

Developers for the Apple platform can now get access to the Mac OS X Intel kernel source and will have their own website to exchange ideas and download software tools, according to announcement at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

There seems to be a perception that there is a race between Apple and Microsoft to be the first to bring their new operating systems to the market. This is total baloney there is no race, no competition because the two systems don't intersect and anyway Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is already probably at least on a par if not ahead of the upcoming Vista. Leopard, when it is released, will likely be way more advanced.

 
AMD gets into business desktops with Lenovo E-mail

Number two x86 processor player AMD hopes to further its desktop market share by bolstering its weakest segment, the business market. Leading the charge is a deal that AMD has forged with Lenovo, which will see the Chinese PC giant release its new ThinkCentre A60 range of business desktops with AMD inside.

 
Worldwide PDA shipments reach record in 2Q 2006 E-mail

Worldwide PDA (personal digital assistant) shipments totaled 3.7 million units in the second quarter of 2006, a 2.7% increase from the second quarter of 2005, according to reasearch group Gartner. This was the highest PDA shipment total of any second quarter on record.
