Bloggers and online journalists have triumphed over Apple Computer in court. A three-member judiciary panel ruled that the computer manufacturer could not force an ISP to hand over email records which could divulge the names of sources of bloggers the company claims revealed trade secrets.

Symantec has acknowledged the vulnerability in its Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (note: Norton Antivirus is not affected as previously reported) as a high impact risk and has issued a range of intrusion detection signatures (IDS) and intrusion prevention signatures as an interim fix for users.

Heaven help us. We have now reached the point where the world's leading antivirus product may need special security software to protect it from hackers. A serious vulnerability has reportedly been discovered in Symantec products Symantec Client Security and Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition (note: Norton Antivirus is not affected as previously reported) which could enable hackers to gain control of a computer.

Microsoft has actually turned its online mapping product Windows Live Local into a pretty useful tool with new features for the product that it unveiled yesterday. Key enhancements include integration with Outlook XP and 2003, integration with Windows Live messenger and live traffic reports.

The developer of the Morpheus file-sharing system, StreamCast Networks, has filed a lawsuit claiming more than $4 billion damages against eBay, its internet telephony subsidiary Skype and Skype and Kazaa founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, among others. StreamCast alleges in the suit that it was never the given a promised first right of refusal to purchase the FastTrack peer-to-peer file technology that powers Skype.

The past few weeks have witnessed increasing speculation about deals, mergers and acquisitions involving many of the biggest names and most trafficked sites in the internet space. Early on, it was rumours of Microsoft buying Yahoo or just Yahoo's search business. Now that one has been put to bed by Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, fresh speculation has emerged about both a merger and a massive search deal.

PC and flash memory manufacturer, Samsung Electronics plans to release two notebook PCs within weeks that will use flash memory instead of hard drives as storage. Each model will have 32 Gbytes of flash storage, comparable to the capacity of magnetic disk based hard drives, but with much lower power consumption.

New technology from Apple has been incorporated with Nike running shoes, which will allow athlete's to track their performance on iPod Nanos while they're training. The system, called Nike Plus, which retails for US$29, involves a chip with wireless transmitter inserted into the lining of a shoe and a receiver attached to the iPod.
