Intel's tick-tock trick on track for 32nm in '09 E-mail

Intel has completed the development of its 32nm chip technology, and expects it to go into production during the fourth quarter of 2009. The new process should usher in higher performing and more energy efficient chips.

Chip market leader Intel has launched the Intel Core i7 processor, which the company claims is its most advanced desktop processor ever. The Core i7 processor is the first of the new Nehalem processor designs and is claimed to boost performance for video editing, immersive games and other Internet and computer activities by up to 40% without increasing power consumption.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has completed the USB 3.0 specification, dubbed SuperSpeed USB, which will transfer data between devices at 4.8Gbps, ten times faster than the current 2.0 specification.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced on Monday, November 10, 2008 that its newly updated Cray XT Jaguar supercomputer is the fastest “open science” computer in the world. It now purrs along at 1.64 petaflops, what correlates to 1.64 quadrillion mathematical calculations per second.


 
HP recalls tens of thousands of notebook batteries E-mail

In yet another notebook battery recall, HP has issued a worldwide recall for tens of thousands of batteries sold with some of its most popular models. HP has recalled some 32,000 batteries that were supplied with various notebooks manufactured between December 2004 and June 2006, and two vendors have also joined the recall.
