We've become used to notebooks and mobile phones being recalled due to battery problems leading to overheating and in a very few cases fires, but a recall of PC speaker systems on safety grounds seems a new one to us. Unfortunately for speakers manufacturer Logitech, one of its models happens to be in the firing line.

New Gartner report says that the number of installed PCs globally has gone past the 1 billion units figure, and is heading for 2 billion by 2014. Worryingly though, 180 million PCs will be replaced this year, 35 million in landfill with no thought for the environmental impact.

Florida-based Mac cloner Psystar is treading on Apple's toes again, offering Mac OS X Server as an option on its new range of rack-mounted servers. The company caused a stir earlier this year when it launched systems built from generic PC components but with Apple's Leopard preinstalled.

A 400Tflop supercomputer costing $100 million is going to be built at the University of Melbourne in a facility devoted to life sciences and, with that performance, it would rank number four on the Top500 supercomputer list as it stands today. The Victorian state government has guaranteed to put up $50 million for the project, making it a sure bet that the major supercomputer vendors will be bidding for the business.

The latest TOP500 listing of Supercomputers has been released with some interesting highlights. Australia has just one entrant (ranked 468), whereas there are 6 in New Zealand - 4 of which are identical systems at Weta Studios.
