The BeerFiles
beerfiles_email_logo_2BeerFiles is an in-your-face and sometimes irreverent blog concerning all things to do with IT, technology, people and the media from the point of view of a hard boiled technology journalist and commentator. Stan has been in the IT game for about a quarter of a century. In that time, he has seen and written about the rise and fall of more than a few IT players and made many friends, some of whom he has even crossed swords with on occasions. Everything in this blog is purely Stan’s opinion so if you agree, wish to expand upon, correct a post or tell Stan he’s a clueless know nothing, please feel free to do so.

Firefox 3 Beta 2 - faster and easier to navigate
Thursday, 20 December 2007
I've just downloaded and had a casual fool around with Firefox 3 Beta 2 and I'm told that it has approximately 900 improvements over the previous beta, including fixes for stability, performance, memory usage, platform enhancements and user interface improvements. However, what it boils down to is that it's even faster than the Beta 1 version and it is even easier to navigate.

We haven't forgotten Linux in Firefox 3: Mozilla
Friday, 14 December 2007
Mozilla Foundation, the organization behind the Firefox web browser, has defended itself against claims from sections of the Linux community that it has ignored Linux in the development of Firefox 3, the next generation of the browser. Mozilla's chief interface designer says Linux is very much included in the development project.

MySpace, Facebook a danger to our children?
Sunday, 09 December 2007
Recently parents at an Australian private school received a notice from the principal advising them that incidents of cyber bullying at the school had been discovered. The letter went on to warn parents that they should closely monitor the online activities of their children and stop them from joining social networks such as MySpace and Facebook. Is this sound advice or unnecessarily alarmist?

Vista piracy the least of Microsoft's problems
Thursday, 06 December 2007
Like thousands of other media commentators around the world, in January this year I attended the offical Microsoft launch of Windows Vista. In my show bag of goodies, among the press releases, I found shiny new boxed copies of the Ultimate versions of Vista and Office 2007. Since I didn't have a computer at the time that could run Vista, I loaned my copy to iTWire blogger Sam Varghese for a review. What happened next is most interesting.

Wednesday, 05 December 2007
A Sony commissioned report released today claims the Blu-ray disc format had a 95.2% market share for home entertainment hardware and software in October 2007 while the HD-DVD format held just the remaining 4.8% share.

Asus EeePC sold out across Australia
Monday, 03 December 2007
The word from our ear on the ground is that the Asus EeePC sub-notebook, which made its Australian debut in the Myer department store chain on 2 December, was sold out completely across stores in the major capitals by Sunday.

Asus corrects EeePC source issue, now onwards and upwards for Linux
Thursday, 29 November 2007
Asus has released a statement saying that it has provided the open source code for its wildly popular EeePC Linux sub-notebook. Now that company has thrown open its books so to speak, it's time to move on and let the first Linux computer to capture the imagination of the mainstream consumer have its place in the sun without further nitpicking.

Is the whole world having a "c-change" and going Mac?
Tuesday, 27 November 2007
Recently a long time PC user friend dropped a bombshell on me - he had a "c-change" and bought an iMac. A sophisticated Windows user who works for one of the world's largest PC software companies (not Microsoft), he told me he couldn't be bothered with Windows any more, didn't like Vista. What's more, he said many of his colleagues at the office had also gone Mac. What's going on here?  Recent Mac market share statistics are quite revealing.

Is Microsoft a danger to the environment?
Tuesday, 27 November 2007
As many commentators have alluded to in numerous articles for the past two decades Microsoft and Intel have a very special relationship often referred to as the Wintel alliance. The question is in a world concerned with climate change and global warming can the world afford to allow the Wintel alliance to continue?

Netgear phone says bye bye PSTN, hello VoIP
Sunday, 25 November 2007
I've been having a play with a review unit of a Netgear SPH200D cordless DECT phone with Skype and after just one weekend I have come to the conclusion that I only need half of what this phone can do. The other half, making phone calls using an expensive landline, I may as well simply switch off.

Asus eeePC violates GPL say Linux stalwarts
Sunday, 25 November 2007
Members of the Linux community have complained that the hot new sub-notebook from Asus, the eeePC, may have violated the spirit of the Linux General Public License (GPL). Some Linux advocates claim the eeePC has not included required source code with the installed Xandros Linux distribution and does not easily enable users to install another distro. However, there are indications that eeePC fans probably don't care.
