The 1TB drive race is on, Hitachi claims pole position E-mail

Yesterday Seagate announced that it will bring to market a 1TB hard drive in the first half of the year. Today Hitachi attempted to go one better, saying it will release a 1TB drive three months earlier.

Hard drive manufacturer Seagate has issued a statement revealing that the company plans to release a 1 Terabyte hard drive in the first half of 2007. Seagate has been shipping products with 750GB of storage capacity, currently the highest available, since April 2006.

According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Storage Software Tracker, the worldwide storage software market grew 8.6% year-over-year to $2.5 billion in the second quarter of 2006, marking eleven consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth.

 
Samsung on a roll with new flash E-mail

With two important announcements, Samsung has demonstrated in stunning fashion its power in the flash memory market. Firstly, it has unveiled a 32Gbit NAND flash module the size of a thumbnail. Secondly, it has developed a new type of flash technology called PRAM (Phase-change Random Access Memory)  which is claimed to be 30 times as fast as conventional flash.
