Nokia has released in Australia a swag of new phones and accessories in time for Christmas, and in anticipation of the local launch of the Nokia Music Store in 2008. It has also said there may be a version of the popular 95 for Telstra's Next G network before Christmas.

The Australian mobile industry's mobile recycling programme, MobileMuster has teamed up with a leading jeweller to show how the material recovered from recycled phones can be re-used. And on a different tack, a US research company estimates the market for handsets recycled for re-use to be $US3.5 billion per year.

Unwired has reported customer revenue growth of 11.7 percent to $10.6 million for the quarter to 30 September and says it had more than 73,000 customers at that date, a six percent increase over the quarter.

Communications minister, Helen Coonan, has lost no opportunity to spruik progress with Opel, the Optus-Elders joint venture which has received almost $1 billion of Government funding to rollout wired and wireless broadband in regional and rural Australia, but a senior Optus executive says the entity exists to date in name only and that funding is contingent on Optus proving that the technology can deliver.

Macquarie Bank has taken a 20 percent stake in Internet café and kiosk chain, Everywhere Internet, for an undisclosed sum and will provide debt finance to fund the rollout of additional cafes and kiosks across Australia.
