Telco heavyweights agree to limit LTE IPR costs E-mail

The Long Term Evolution of cellular technology - which promises wireless broadband access in the 100Mbps range -  has taken a significant step forward with seven major global telco vendors signing up to an agreement that will limit intellectual property licensing fees and, hopefully, avoid the costly and protracted IPR litigation that has bedevilled other technologies in recent years.

UK-based chip maker CSR has demonstrated the first ultra-low power bluetooth chip. The technology, previously known as Wibree, promises to enable wireless data communications from small devices powered by button sized batteries typically used in wrist watches with standby battery life of up to ten years.

ArrayComm - whose technology underpins the iBurst wireless broadband network - has teamed up with Korean device manufacturer C-motech to produce terminals for mobile networks that it claims will have up to double the throughput - without any changes to the network.

Cap-XX & Murata partner to improve cellphone sound and photo-flash E-mail

Supercapacitors can significantly improve cellphone performance - particularly flash for cameraphones and audio quality - and Australian manufacturer Cap-XX has signed a partnership with Japanese manufacturer Murata that it says will boost the implementation of this technology in future handsets, and the development of the next generation of supercapacitors.

Microvision is this week demonstrating at the CTIA Wireless 2008 show in Las Vegas the prototype of a device that could be incorporated into a cellphone to enable the screen image to be projected large size onto a wall.

Guinness World Records names modu as lightest cellphone E-mail

The Guinness World Record for the world's lightest mobile phone has been awarded to the modu from the Israeli company of the same name. It weighs in at just 40.1 grammes and which at 72.1 x 37.6 x 7.8mm is considerably smaller than a credit card.

 
Alcatel-Lucent to base SME comms products on Red Hat Linux E-mail
