As the demand for IT graduates starts to climb and enrolments into IT courses continues to drop, one of Australia's largest employers of IT people is finding it tougher to stay too picky. According to Mike Shove, CEO of IT services provider CSC Australia, the company now takes on 40% more graduates than it did two years ago but gets just over half the number of applicants.

The chief technology officer of Federal Government funded ICT research organization NICTA has sounded the alarm bells about the lack of Australian students  pursuing IT degrees. However, despite the shortage of IT graduates, Google Australia & New Zealand says it is getting plenty of applicants for jobs but wants more.

As a nationwide technology skills shortage continues to bite deeper, a new report reveals that demand for ICT workers skyrocketed by 13.75% in May. The news follows on the heels of another report released yesterday by recruiter Ambition Technology showing ICT salaries shot up 10% for the same month.

IT salaries in Australia jumped 10% in May, as a shortfall in local technology skills continues to put upward pressure on pay rates, according to a new report. Areas and skills most in demand include project management, application development and J2SE.

In March Information Technology was the best-performing sector in executive employment market, followed by Engineering. This continues the recent trend where these two sectors act out of step with the broader market. Management registered a slight increase, while Finance and Marketing fell back considerably.

SMS adds 85 staff amid strong profit rise E-mail

IT&T services provider SMS Management & Technology (ASX:SMX) has announced a net profit after tax of $6.9m for the six months to 31 December 2006, this was a 32% increase on the first half last year. The strength of the services sector was highlighted by the company's recruiting drive for additional consultants, bringing total staff numbers up to 892.
