$4 million facility to support joint Australian, NZ bid for SKA E-mail

The Western Australian town of Geraldton, 460 kilometres north of Perth, is set to play a key role in Australian astronomy in support of the bid to host the $2.5 billion Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio-telescope, with the Australian Government’s announcement today that a new research facility is to be built in the town.

 
Space Station to become circus of the sun E-mail

Founder of Cirque du Soleil (French for "Circus of the Sun"), Guy Labiberté, was blasted into space onboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on September 30, 2009. The Canadian space tourist will promote water awareness during his stay at the International Space Station.

 
China 3Ds the Moon E-mail

According to a leader of the Chang'e 1 mission to the Moon, the Chinese have completed a high-resolution, three-dimensional map of the lunar surface. In fact, this mapping is the most detailed imaging of the Moon so far taken by any spacecraft of the entire lunar surface.

Astronomers on Earth are about to learn a whole lot more about the planet Mercury as NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft passes less than 229 kilometers (142 miles) above the planet’s surface on September 29, 2009.

 
A bit more water found on Mars E-mail

In a week where water ice (lunar ice) was found on the Moon, NASA scientists with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) mission have found a new location to look for water ice (frozen water) on Mars: just under the surface at newly formed impact craters.
