NASA surprised with strange ribbon circling solar system E-mail

THE NASA spacecraft IBEX is making a map of the edge of the heliosphere, the magnetic boundary formed by the solar wind and interstellar matter at the edge of the solar system. Unexpectedly, IBEX imaged a "bright, winding ribbon of unknown origin" that goes about 80% away around the solar system.

The Indian Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft discovers that the Moon absorbs rays from the Sun in order to create water on its lunar surface. Surprisingly, though, some of them are reflected back into space. When galaxies collide: bright, bizarre NGC 2623 E-mail

The Hubble Space Telescope has just revealed a gigantic collision of two spiral galaxies about 250 million light-years away from our own Milky Way galaxy. Check out the images of the resulting "bright and bizarre" galaxy that astronomers are calling NGC 2623.

 
You only saw Moon impacts with infrared eyes E-mail

Although spectators were disappointed by not seeing the debris plumes after two space vehicles crashed into a lunar crater on Friday, October 9, 2009, NASA scientists saw the collision with infrared instruments and are hopeful they recorded incidences of water on the Moon.

 
Asteroid Apophis less likely to collide with Earth E-mail

NASA astronomers have revised their estimates as to the likelihood that near-Earth asteroid 99942 Apophis will impact Earth in the year 2036. The chance for a collision has gone from 1-in-45,000 (0.0022%) to 1-in-250,000 (0.0004%). Whew! I feel better!
