Australia’s National Information and Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence, NICTA, has appointed Dr Sylvie Thiébaux as director of its Canberra research laboratory. Dr Thiebaux, an Associate Professor at the Australian National University has worked at NICTA for six years, leading a project which developed tools to diagnose problems in complex systems such as smart energy grids.

According to Australian researchers, the probability of predicting the next thunderstorm is now better with the use of a technique called THESPA, which can produce “nowcasts” for up to one hour ahead of the storm.
