When you buy a computer today, it often comes with a range of third party software, pre-loaded for your ‘convenience’. Sometimes it’s useful – such as a pre-loaded Internet security suite with a 15 month subscription, other times it’s useless demo software that’s just taking up space and must be manually uninstalled. Why do companies do this, and why did Sony decide to charge money to take the ‘unwanted’ software away?

Why the iPhone SHOULD be a modem

The current 2G model iPhone can’t officially be tethered to a notebook and then used as a wireless Internet connection, although hacker extraordinaire Nate True figured out how to do it anyway some time ago. But despite arguments that the iPhone’s data plan explains why it currently isn’t an official tethered modem, such arguments are nonsense: it’s my iPhone and I should be able to use it as a modem if desired, even if it costs me more money.

Late last year Uruguay landed its first shipment of 100,000 units of the much lauded, sometimes criticised XO laptop from the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organisation. Buoyed by that success, Walter Bender, president software and content at OLPC effused over the next countries in line for the little green machine. The question is, however, can the likes of Peru, Mexico, Ethiopia, Haiti, Rwanda, Mongolia and a myriad of other impoverished countries stump up with the cash needed to join the OLPC bandwagon? The sums are not that difficult to do.
