You've all heard a major new flaw has been found affecting Internet Explorer all the way back to version 5. Microsoft pushed out a fix out of their regular "patch Tuesday" monthly schedule. The flaw has prompted some commentators to call for the replacement of IE with alternate browsers like Firefox. Just what was so serious? And what do Microsoft say that show Linux has the superior design?

It has been claimed that an attendee at the Chinese WinHEC conference has managed to leak a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) image of the previously unreleased Windows 7 6956 build to torrent sites on the Internet. Some have claimed success in downloading the file and running as a VHD, others claim no success and say that “Chinese hackers” are trying to convert the VHD into an installable ISO instead.

15 years ago Dan Farmer wrote a program called SATAN designed to help sysadminis detect vulnerabilities in their networks. He was criticised because of the massive potential for malice if used by "the wrong people" and was fired by his employer, SGI. Now, I'm not in Farmer's league but I'm going to risk my reputation here and now to practically explain SQL injection by cracking two publicly available web sites.

Microsoft: programming contest defaced, not hacked

Yesterday I reported on a Microsoft Australia programming contest to find star developers which had many more submissions from "Ov3rLord" and Turkish self-labelled hackers than genuine entrants. Microsoft phoned in their side of the story. Yet even if the site was not hacked (and suffered merely the lesser charge of prank defacement) it still suffered problems.

Microsoft followed their annual major Tech-Ed event in Australia with a week-long programming contest called "DevSta," to find "star developers." While the quantity and quality of submissions suggest a poor turnout it certainly caught the attention of at least two hackers who left their mark.

The very technology underpinning the Internet – TCP/IP – came to life in the world of UNIX. It's no surprise that the best network "auditing" (ie snooping!) tools are to be found on Linux, and not that Johnny-come-lately, Windows. Here is the reason why Windows is crippled by comparison.

Cue marching band music and a big cartoon foot. US Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, hackers have revealed, has used a Yahoo! free webmail account to talk government business with aides. Arguments over whether this was pure stupidity or a clever attempt to avoid those emails becoming public record rage.
