The number of people using mobile banking and related services worldwide is forecast to grow from 20 million users in 2008 to a whopping 913 million by 2014.

Almost daily there’s more news about the devastating impact the worldwide economic downturn is having on all business sectors, including the technology industry where the latest report reveals a big drop in mobile phone shipments.

The current economic situation has proved that the mobile phone market generally is not immune to recession but, in Western Europe, at least the rapidly expanding consumer market for the latest smartphones grew by nearly 26% in the last quarter of 2008 compared to the corresponding period of 2007, according to IDC’s latest European Mobile Phone Tracker report.

Mobile internet operators have a moral obligation to provide safeguards that limit access of children and, what’s more, they should consider self-regulation and their social responsibility or face the prospect of regulators demanding that they implement methods to protect children, according to a UK management firm advising that country’s technology, media and telecommunications industries.

Telstra is now making available to all consumer customers, what it says is an “innovative service” – the conversion of voicemail to text – after encouraging feedback from its business customers using the new service.
