Written By: Alex Zaharov-Reutt

A reader asks if my plea to Microsoft to offer realistic Windows pricing will ever be listened to. Of course Microsoft is listening, but will they do anything beyond announcing higher prices at the worst possible moment in history?

Windows 7 netbook performance: can MS make it faster?

Although Microsoft has reportedly dropped the ludicrous idea of limiting its Win 7 OS to running three main apps, starter version or no, my own testing of Win 7 RC on a couple of netbooks shows it to be slower than I expected. What’s going on?

The other day my partner left the market shopping list at home. I took a few minutes off from cleaning the house to try SMSing it to her using Skype, rather than using the small keyboard on my mobile. However I found that the latest Linux Skype client, version 2.0.0.72, does not include SMS functionality (amongst quite a few other features that Windows users have). Frustrated with Skype's treating Linux users like second-rate citizens, I resolved to see what alternatives there are to Skype. I started with Ekiga, which is pre-installed on Ubuntu. Read on to find out how I went getting rid of Skype and its limitations.

Although Asus originally intended its first Eee PC 701 to be used in an educational setting, rather than being the catalyst that ignited the netbook revolution, Dell is the first company to have properly designed a netbook that can withstand the rigours of teenage and classroom life – and have outfitted it with a(n optional) touch-screen, while also making Ubuntu 9.04 an Australian netbook option for the first time.

Does GNU/Linux need a cult figure like Steve Jobs to spread the word and convert the doubters? And does FOSS lend itself to the development of such egos, where technical merit alone does not count?

Charles Dickens wrote that "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". I have a feeling that he wasn’t referring to computer operating system boot times, but that's what I’m going to discuss today. More specifically Ubuntu 9.04's boot times.

Desktop Linux great white hope hits the canvas

At the beginning of 2008, the landmark Eee PC netbook running Xandros Linux left an unprepared red faced Microsoft with 0% share of a burgeoning new market. Nine months later, thanks to a resurrected Windows XP, Microsoft had 70% of the netbook space. Six months on and recent reports suggest that Linux on netbooks is down to single digits and heading south. True or false?

Are Linux netbooks becoming extinct?

The netbook ought to have been the domain of Linux. It certainly started that way, with the inaugural 7" ASUS Eee Linux PC sporting Xandros. Then Windows XP came back into vogue and the vendors backed away. Both ASUS and Dell confirmed today that Linux features little in their future plans.

Ever since the unexpected advent of netbooks – who would have expected low-powered computing to be such a winner – Microsoft has been working to push Linux out. Unlike Vista, Windows 7 will run effectively on a netbook. However, Microsoft have reminded us they’re a proprietary company with the offensive Windows 7 Starter Edition being limited to three apps only. Are they trying to insult us or what?

Ubuntu Linux 9.04, otherwise known as Jaunty Jackalope, will be released later this month. Forget Windows 7, this is going to be the hottest operating software release of 2009. Yet, the muddy brown and orange theme doesn't do it for me which is why this time I'm eyeing off something else from Canonical's stable.

It comes as both a surprise and not a surprise that the New South Wales (NSW) state government chose a "safe bet" of Lenovo and Microsoft to supply many thousands of taxpayer-funded laptops to secondary school students. Was Linux ever on the short list?

In a shock announcement, Microsoft has today taken majority ownership of software house Novell. This immediately gives the Redmond giant control of Novell's intellectual property assets including the legal copyright over UNIX. Already Red Hat and Canonical (Ubuntu) have expressed their expectation Microsoft will aggressively seek to eradicate all distributions save for Microsoft Linux Vista, formerly SUSE. You know a virus is making it in the news when your network’s users start asking you about it (instead of the latest round of "good news virus" hoaxes.) It's prudent for those in technical leadership roles to send out encouraging messages why nobody need panic. Here’s a template e-mail you can copy-and-paste, with versions for Windows, Linux and Mac infrastructures!
