I used to think that there was no one more passionate about their high-tech toys than Apple Mac users or Linux geeks. I may be wrong. Judging from the number of irate emails I received in response to an article concerning Blu-ray and HD DVD, I would say video player buffs get the gong for being the most frenzied lot right now.

Pricing for Blu-ray and HD DVD high definition video devices have become a perplexing question. First, experts throw up questions about the low pricing of Toshiba HD DVD players, claiming that the strip down price of the players retailing for US$499 is about US$700. Toshiba has denied this and claims to make a profit on its HD DVD players. Now Taiwanese vendor BenQ has announced the release next month of the first Blu-ray recorder for just over US$1000, far less than any competitive offering.

There is something to be said for sticking to your guns if you have a superior product. At least that's what Sony demonstrably believes judging by its recent policies on pricing. PlayStation 3 will be by far the most expensive gaming platform but Sony makes no apology because it believes, despite assertions to the contrary, that it can wipe the floor with Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Likewise, Sony is convinced that its Blu-ray technology is set to win the high definition video stakes and there are signs that the HD DVD backers know it.

Dual format video discs sound nice in theory but in practice the idea will likely go down in history with such marvels as the steam powered automobile and telephone voice recognition systems that put you through to an operator. Not that it wouldn't be handy to have one disc that can be played on both an ordinary DVD player and an HD DVD player - just not at twice the price.
