Geological scientists are studying the African and Arabian tectonic plates as two continental shelves tear land apart in northern Ethiopia. Normally, plate tectonics cause average movements of about 15 millimeters per year. However, over the last two years some land has spectacularly moved large distances—the largest one being eight meters (8,000 millimeters) overnight.
