Aliens could see Earth as haven for life
By: William Atkins
According to a study performed by U.S. and Spanish astronomers, alien astronomers could “hypothetically” identify Earth as a planet orbiting the Sun and observe our planet with clouds and oceans—just like we are trying to do with planets circling other stars.

Where oh where is the comet?
By: William Atkins
That’s what they said when NASA scientists decided to send their Deep Impact spacecraft to Comet 85P/Boethin. When they looked again for the comet, it was no where to be found. So, Deep Impact was re-direced to Comet Hartley 2.

First direct evidence of early flattening as planets form
By: William Atkins
Illinois astronomers used the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope to show that early in the planet-forming phase a spinning cloud of gas and dust flattens as it begins to develop into a planet. This discovery will help astronomers learn more about how our own Sun looked when it was first born.

NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory finds star moving at hypervelocity speed
By: William Atkins
The star is called RX J0822-4300. It is a neutron star created from the Puppis A supernova explosion—and it is moving away from the explosion, according to two U.S. scientists, at about three million miles per hour.

Has first evidence of another universe been seen?
By: William Atkins
Astronomers announced in August 2007 the discovery of a large hole at the edge of our universe. Since then, theoretical physicist and cosmologist Laura Mersini-Houghton and colleagues have claimed it is an “unmistakable imprint of another universe beyond the edge of our own.”
